What Lives, and What We Buy InsteadCe qui vit, et ce que nous achetons à la place
This week, a small robot called Microduck sold out within days of its release, close to four hundred dollars each, bought by people eager to train it, to watch it learn their habits and respond on command. Clever, certainly, and bought by far more people than I expected.
Even through the extreme heat of last summer, the birds outside had gone unusually quiet, as though holding something back, saving themselves for a cooler hour that did not come for weeks.
Sir David Attenborough's voice shaped how I came to see the world as a child, The Blue Planet unfolding on a screen somewhere, every creature given its own small history, a world worth knowing by name rather than simply looked at. That has never left me.La voix de Sir David Attenborough a façonné le regard que j'ai porté sur le monde, enfant, La Planète Bleue se déployant sur un écran quelque part, chaque créature dotée de sa propre petite histoire, un monde qui méritait d'être connu par son nom plutôt que simplement regardé. Cela ne m'a jamais quittée.
This spring, a young manatee was moved from a French zoo to Pairi Daiza, in Belgium, carefully, deliberately, across a continent. It was not sentiment that moved her. It was a breeding programme, run between zoos that share animals the way a careful family shares what it has, to keep a small, fragile population genetically strong enough to continue existing at all, and to balance how many males live among how many females. She was sent to the place where the right company for her already was. A species survives only in the right company. It occurs to me that we are rarely so different.
I think of Ginger, thirteen years in our family before she died last year, and Obi before her, another thirteen years again. Every morning, she was the one already awake, waiting at the bottom of the stairs before anyone else in the house had found their voice. We would come down for breakfast still half asleep, and she was there, a small point everyone touched on the way to the kettle, a hello before any of us had managed one of our own. Then she would settle back down and wait, patiently, for whatever crumbs came her way. Some of what she carried for us left with her when she went, more than I have found words for yet.
I do not know, some days, where any of us are going, chasing something that learns to please us for four hundred dollars, while the living things that actually need us, and could actually know us, wait.

Touch something living today. A pet, a plant, a tree, a stranger's dog in the street. Give it one full minute of attention, expecting nothing back.
